Earlier this year, Empirisys partnered with Step Change in Safety to deliver the largest-ever Process Safety Workforce Survey, gathering insights from nearly 2,000 workforce members across 90 companies.
This comprehensive survey has provided the most detailed understanding of the sector’s process safety culture, building on the 2023 survey that focused on senior leadership perspectives. In the 2024 survey, we widened the scope to focus on the workforce, capturing data from 25 departments and 11 roles, with over 10,301 comments provided. This data reflects a broad range of operational experiences, offering a deeper look into the culture of high-hazard environments.
Key Findings from the Survey:
- A strong safety culture is firmly embedded in most organisations, with nearly all respondents feeling comfortable reporting hazards and stopping work if necessary.
- Sharing major accident hazard information remains a challenge, with less than half of respondents aware of how their organisation compares to others.
- Senior leadership vs workforce perspectives: A notable difference exists between leadership perceptions and the workforce's day-to-day experience, particularly around leaders' presence on-site and their engagement in safety processes.
