Empirisys was founded by senior leaders in high-hazard industry and digital technology, who have significant experience of driving measurable improvements in process safety performance.

Our experience covers high hazard and complex operations, through the application of novel data science solutions.

We work with organisations who share our belief that changing culture is fundamental to creating the conditions that enable safer, better performing, more environmentally responsible and, ultimately, more sustainable businesses to evolve. Gus Carroll

Co-Founder & CEO

Gus has worked in senior leadership roles in high hazard industries for over 20 years and has a passion for helping leaders create high performing teams. Gus was previously Chief Engineer at Centrica and holds degrees in Chemical Engineering and an MBA from Henley.

Peter Sueref

Co-Founder & CTO

Peter has worked with data his whole career since graduating in Computer Science at Cardiff University. He was the Data Science Director at Centrica where he worked on some of the biggest problems in energy today.

Dr. Nyala Noe

Chief Data Scientist

Through her background in social psychology and computer science, Nyala has developed a particular interest in using networks to make sense of complex data. After completing her PhD at Cardiff University, Nyala started her career as a data scientist and eventually joined Empirisys as one of it's founding employees.

Das Wijesundera

Head of Data & Technology

Das’ passion led him towards building robust engineering practices and improving product experiences through novel data science solutions. As a Computer Science graduate from Royal Holloway and founding employee of Empirisys, Das continues to challenge himself in leading cross-disciplinary teams to develop ideas into products.

Roger Berriman

Technical Manager

Roger has a background in Process Safety with over 20 years’ experience in operations and high hazard safety management in the chemicals, refining and oil & gas sectors. Roger is a registered Professional Process Safety Engineer, a chartered Chemical Engineer and a member of IChemE.

MaryAnn Rae

Relationship Manager

MaryAnn is a highly experienced senior HSE&Q practitioner with over 23 years’ experience working both on and offshore in the oil & gas industry. Recently MaryAnn has been working as an Assessor of leadership commitment and organisational culture in the construction industry for a program integral to responding to the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire. In her early career, MaryAnn was a commissioned officer in the British and Oman Army.

Kate Roberts

Marketing Manager

Kate has worked in food manufacturing for over 20 years in marketing insight and commercial roles. She has an MBA from Cardiff University which she completed whilst working full time. Kate runs her own leadership coaching business and is passionate about helping individuals be themselves at work and achieve their full potential.

Dr. Krish Parmar

Technical Manager

Krish has an academic background in Physics, Mathematics and a PhD in fluid dynamics from Cranfield. He has strong industry experience from the automotive and aerospace sectors. He is passionate about social safety and using his strong analytical capabilities to make a difference.

Deborah Murray

Business Support Manager

Deborah is a highly experienced PA, HR Generalist, QHSE Assistant, Coordinator and Administrator, with over 23 years experience. She has a level 5 CIPD Associate Diploma with Distinction which she completed whilst working full time.Deborah is passionate about empowering and allowing employees to have a voice, taking ownership, responsibility and accountability for their duties.

Andrea Rossi

Product Manager

Andrea is a Management Engineering graduate from the University of Pisa, with a passion for applying scientific methodologies to product development. With a keen interest in exploring customer problems and identifying innovative solutions, Andrea is especially drawn to data science algorithms as a means of achieving this goal.

Sumi Lee

Junior Data Scientist

Having graduated from Swansea University in 2018 with a Bachelor's in Mathematics, Sumi brings a robust foundation in analytical thinking to our team at Empirisys. Sumi has recently completed her Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Data and AI and aspires to further enhance her expertise with a Master's in Statistics in the future. Beyond data, Sumi enjoys swimming and playing guitar, showcasing a harmonious blend of analytical acumen and artistic flair.

Sian has recently graduated with a BSc Business Management at Cardiff University. Sian has an interest in all things communication and strategy which has resulted in a passion for marketing and sales.

Richard Or

Junior Data Engineer

Richard has recently graduated with an MSc in data science and analytics at Cardiff University. Richard has a strong interest in programming, data modeling and cloud computing. Apart from work, Richard enjoys playing sport and embracing new challenges.

Olivia Harris

UI/UX Designer

Olivia graduated with a BSc in Computer Science from Cardiff University in 2022. She has a keen interest in all things design related, and enjoys taking a user-focused approach to analysing issues and solving problems.

Idris Hayward

Junior Data Scientist

Idris graduated with a Masters in Chemistry from the University of Southampton in 2018 and is currently completing his PhD in Environmental Engineering. Idris enjoys hiking, photography and singing in male voice choirs while also teaching himself how to speak Welsh.

Gwilym Rees

Junior Data Scientist

Gwilym holds a BSc in Natural Sciences from Exeter University and began his career in an unexpected field – spending two years as a professional chef before transitioning into data science. He later attained a PgDip in Applied Data and AI at the University of South Wales. Gwilym is passionate about leveraging machine learning and data visualization to drive advancements within the process safety sector.

Data Engineer

Fred has recently graduated with a masters in Electronic Engineering with AI at the University of Southampton. He is passionate about the computer sciences with a strong interest in data engineering and visualisation.

David Riskus

Front-End Developer

David Graduated with a BSc in Air Transport and Logistics Management from the University of Huddersfield, David worked primarily as a business developer in the construction industry. Motivated by the prospects of digitization, he transitioned his career into web development. To specialize in front-end development, David has successfully completed his MSc in Computing at Cardiff University.

Beejal has an academic background in Sociology, Social Research Methods and Statistics from City University. She has over twenty years experience in conducting research and managing projects for a diverse range of organisations in the not-for-profit sector. Beejal has a keen interest in assessing impact and improving performance for social safety.

Morgan Walters

Data Scientist

Morgan graduated with a master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Birmingham in 2021. His interest in using data to analyse, optimise and transform industryled him to pursue further education: he is currently studying towards a PgDip in Applied Data Science and AI at the University of South Wales.

Oscar Russell

Junior Front-End Developer

After graduating with a BSc in Computer Science at Cardiff University, Oscar joined us as a UX/UI Designer and quickly evolved into a front-end developer, channeling his fever for innovation in design and software development. Beyond work, Oscar enjoys sports and constantly seeks new ways to challenge himself.

Data Scientist

Michaela graduated with a Masters in Biomedical Engineering at Kings College London and went on to do a Masters in Applied Data Science at University of South Wales. Michaela now has over 5 years experience of building AI software products and loves creating innovative solutions to problems.

Apoorva holds an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts, and is passionate about learning new technologies, leveraging AI and Machine learning to develop innovative solutions and drive technological advancement. Reg Garnepudi

Senior Technology Consultant

Reg is an experienced software engineer/architect and data scientist who has worked on a huge variety of data products over the last twenty-five years including computer vision frameworks, image processing, time series forecasting, data visualisation, internet-of-things products, sensor fusion, CRM frameworks and trading platforms. He is known for maintaining a good balance between research, innovation and delivering production-ready products.

Andrew Gibson

Associate

Andrew is a highly experienced production and asset manager with extensive knowledge of the safe and regulatory compliant operation of offshore subsea gas storage and associated pipeline transmission. He has over 25 years of experience with UK oil and gas companies with major North Sea interests, Andrew possess a deep practical knowledge of offshore and onshore gas transmission and storage technical operation. He is a chartered engineer and a Member of the IChemE.

Colin Deddis

Associate

Colin is a chemical engineer with 30 years of experience in technical leadership and process safety roles gained through working with global majors and technical consultancies. He is a recognised expert in overpressure protection and blowdown, HAZOP, LOPA and risk management, and has worked. Colin was a lecturer in chemical engineering at Cambridge University and current is the RAE Visiting Professor of chemical engineering at the University of Strathclyde. He is a chartered engineer and a Fellow of the IChemE.

Nils Cohrs

Associate

Nils has over 30 years of experience in the international oil & gas industry in a range of operations, drilling, and asset management roles with Shell, Centrica, TAQA and Gulf Keystone. He spent 3 years as Head of Decommissioning at the Oil & Gas Authority (now known as NSTA). He is a Fellow of the Energy Institute.

Pete Paragreen

Associate

Pete has 28 years of knowledge and experience in the onshore and offshore gas storage, production, and processing industry with roles in engineering, operations, and management. During his extensive career, Pete spent 4 years managing a Top Tier COMAH gas processing facility and a further 12 years as an offshore installation manager in the southern North Sea. He is a chartered member of the Institute of Gas Engineers and Managers.

Phil Cliffe

Associate

Phil is a business operations professional with over 34 years of international upstream experience including over twenty-two years with Royal Dutch Shell in senior technical leadership roles in the UK, Europe, Middle East and Africa. Phil has specific expertise in drilling, HSE, asset management, supply chain, commercial and non-operated ventures.

Darren Oliver

Associate

Darren has over 30 years’ experience in high hazard industries. He has spent over 20 years working in roles ranging from shift team leader through to operations director in the onshore and offshore oil & gas sector. He has a particular interest and expertise in safety leadership and helping to build effective organisational cultures.

Chairman of the Board

Iain was CEO of energy company BP before he became CEO at Centrica and was on the board of directors of the energy giant for a number of years. His responsibilities included safety, operational risk, and information technology at BP. Iain is now a senior advisor for infrastructure, energy and sustainability at Blackstone and has recently been elected as chair of Engineering UK

Ken Robertson

Advisor

Ken is an experienced director with a demonstrated history of working at senior level in the global energy industry. He is skilled in asset management, process safety and is a Non-Executive Director to the Health & Safety Executive.

Kevin D'Arcy

Advisor

Kevin is a Non-Executive Director and investor in several startups. He is an experienced Chief Financial Officer in FT100 businesses including energy, consumer and financial services. He currently chairs the audit & risk committee of one of UK’s largest pension funds.

David Bleackley

Advisor

David is a chemical engineer with over 30 year’s experience across the process industries with significant leadership roles in enterprise industrial software organisations focused on Design, Operations and Supply Chain Optimisation.
