Who We Are

Empirisys was founded in 2020 by two former senior leaders from Centrica who have significant experience of driving measurable improvements in process safety performance in high hazard, complex operations, through the application of novel data science solutions.

We work with organisations who share our belief that changing culture is fundamental to creating the conditions that enable safer, better performing, more environmentally responsible and, ultimately, more sustainable businesses to evolve. These goals can be achieved with a more data driven approach.

Gus Carroll

Co-Founder & CEO

Gus has worked in senior leadership roles in high hazard industries for over 20 years and has a passion for helping leaders create high performing teams. Gus was previously Chief Engineer at Centrica and holds degrees in chemical engineering and an MBA from Henley.   

Peter Sueref

Co-Founder & CTO

Peter has worked with data his whole career since graduating in Computer Science at Cardiff University. He was the Data Science Director at Centrica where he worked on some of the biggest problems in energy today.  

Dr. Nyala Noe

Data Scientist

Through her background in social psychology and computer science, Nyala has developed a particular interest in using networks to make sense of complex data. After completing her PhD at Cardiff University, Nyala started her career as a data scientist and eventually joined Empirisys as one of it's founding employees.

Das Wijesundera

Data Scientist

Beginning in software engineering and data science, Das’ passion led him towards building robust engineering practices and improving product experiences through novel solutions. As a Computer Science graduate from Royal Holloway and founding employee of Empirisys, Das continues to challenge himself in leading cross-disciplinary teams to develop ideas into products.

David Riskus

Front-End Developer

David graduated in Air Transport and Logistics Management at University of Huddersfield and worked primarily in the construction industry as a business developer. Inspired by the digitisation opportunities, David pivoted his career to web development. To specialise in front-end development, David is currently completing his MSc in Computing from Cardiff University.

Fred McArthur

Front-End Developer

Fred is currently completing a masters in Electronic Engineering with Artificial Intelligence at the University of Southampton. He is passionate about the computer sciences with a strong interest in data science and cyber security.

Tracey Higgins

Office Manager

After graduating at Birkbeck University, with an MA in Multimedia studies in the History of Art. Tracey’s background spans from graphic, web design to project and event management. Her role as Office Manager at Empirisys is pivotal to our ongoing operations.

Andrew Gibson

Chemical Engineer

Andrew is Chartered Chemical Engineer with over thirty years of experience leading in chemical, oil and gas industry. Andrew is an assessor for several UK Research & Innovation funding programmes and a visiting associate at the University of Hull. 

Alex White

Junior Data Scientist

Alex graduated with a masters in Physics from the University of Exeter, and worked in Financial Technology for over 4 years as a product specialist. Now pursuing a career in Data Science, Alex is undertaking a part-time Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Data and AI with The University of South Wales.

Morgan Walters

Junior Data Scientist

Morgan graduated with a master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Birmingham in 2021. His interest in using data to analyse, optimise and transform industry led him to pursue further education: he is currently studying towards a PgDip in Applied Data Science and AI at the University of South Wales.

Sian Richards

Marketing Intern

Sian is currently a student at Cardiff University, studying Business Management. Sian has an interest in all things communication and strategy which has resulted in a passion for marketing.

Michael O'Neill

Chemical Engineer

Michael has a BEng in Chemical Engineering from UCL and extensive experience in process and automation systems engineering on major oil and gas projects. Michael is currently completing an MSc in Process Safety and Loss Prevention at the University of Sheffield and is a TÜV Rheinland certified Functional Safety Engineer (Safety Instrumented Systems).

Empirisys works with a group of associates who have deep industry expertise across Process Safety, Senior Management and Data Science.

Reg Garnepudi

Reg is an experienced software engineer/architect and data scientist who has worked on a huge variety of data products over the last twenty-five years including computer vision frameworks, image processing, time series forecasting, data visualisation, internet-of-things products, sensor fusion, CRM frameworks and trading platforms. He is known for maintaining a good balance between research, innovation and delivering production-ready products.

Dr Don Lloyd

Don is a Chartered Chemical Engineer who holds a PhD in Risk Management and is the Chair of Brunel Business School External Advisory Board. Notable roles include Global Managing Partner at Oil & Gas at Environmental Resources Management, Board Safety Advisor at NATS and Chairman & Non-Executive Director of Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. Don was also a Senior VP at BG Group.

Chris Wray

Chris has over forty years experience in the Oil & Gas, Petrochemicals & Energy. He is an Instrument Engineer by discipline, having worked in commissioning, maintenance and operations, both onshore and offshore prior to moving into technical authority and leadership roles. Previous roles include Chief Operations Engineer at Spirit Energy and Head of Operational Readiness and Assurance, UK & Ireland at Shell E&P.

Madhuban Kumar

Advisor

Madhuban has expertise in early-stage technology investments. She is interested in analytics, AI automation, B2B and consumer led products.  She is highly experienced at working with C-level and Investors to build products that differentiate in large markets.

Dr. Graham Hine

Chairman of the Advisory Board

Graham is a successful technology entrepreneur with a track record in leading, growing and successfully exiting technology companies. Graham has a PhD in Astrophysics from Cambridge University.   

Ken Robertson

Advisor

Ken is an experienced director with a demonstrated history of working at senior level in the global energy industry. He is skilled in asset management, process safety and is a Non-Executive Director to the Health & Safety Executive. 

Kevin D'Arcy

Advisor

Kevin is a Non-Executive Director and investor in several startups. He is an experienced Chief Financial Officer in FT100 businesses including energy, consumer and financial services. He currently chairs the audit & risk committee of one of UK’s largest pension funds. 

Prof. Roger Whitaker

Advisor

Roger has expertise in collective intelligence and data innovation, with interdisciplinary expertise in human, machine and evolutionary intelligence using technologies including social media, smartphones and embedded AI. He is the Director of Supercomputing Wales and the former Dean of Research at Cardiff University.
